The Tower of Babel
The Tower of Babel was the subject of three paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The first, a miniature painted on ivory, was painted while Bruegel was in Rome and is now lost. This is now the most famous.
Pieter Bruegel the Elder was the most significant artist of Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting, a painter and print-maker from Brabant, known for his landscapes and peasant scenes; he was a pioneer in making both types of subject the focus in large paintings.
