A touching and sorrowful representation of St. John leading His Adopted Mother Home after departing the tomb (depicted in the background) wherein Christ was laid. A tribute to some of Christ's last words, the bequeathing of His Mother to the Human Race: "Woman, behold thy Son" and to St. John "Behold thy Mother."

This piece was painted by William Dyce (1806-1864). He was a member of the Pre-Raphaelites and though he never left Europe, he spent much time studying botanical illustrations and observing specimens from overseas. It was in these efforts that he was able to achieve a high level of authenticity.
