Pentecost - The Descent of the Holy Ghost

A Glorious depiction of the Descent of the Holy Ghost upon the Most Blessed Virgin Mary and the Apostles of Christ. Pentecost is the birthday of the Church and when the Great Paraclete, whom Christ said would come, gave the Apostles the Seven Gifts with which they would commence the conversion of all nations. 

This dramatic baroque piece was painted by the French artist Jean Restout II in 1732. It currently resides in the Louvre, but it was originally commissioned for the Abbey of Saint-Denis, outside of Paris.
