Portrait of one of the most famous Royalist leaders and brillant tactitian of the Vendee François-Athanase Charette de la Contrie. This very sought after painting by Paulin Guérin is very hard to find to find reproductions of.

He served in the French Royal Navy during the American Revolutionary War but much more notably as one of the most colorful leaders of the Revolt of the Vendee against the French Revolutionary Regime.  He joined Jacques Cathelineau following the capture of Samur in June 1793 and fought in most of the battles of the Catholic and Royal Army. He was a vicious fighter and greatly feared by the French Revolutionaries. After many victorious engagements, a reneged treaty and betrayal, and a return to arms he was eventually chased down and executed on March 29th, 1796.

He was the inventor of the phrase: "Omelets are not made without breaking eggs" (On ne fuit pas d'omelette sans casser des oeufs")

Even Napoleon felt obliged to recognize that Charette "betrays genius"
